There’s just one catch…

Italy’s State Property Agency expects anyone who receives a free castle to restore the castle so it can be used as a tourist destination. The property can become a spa, restaurant, hotel, or whatever the owner decides. However, the castle must be accessible to the public.

Italy hopes to improve the slow tourism it’s received in recent years, and it hopes to take the strain and stress off popular locations like Venice and Rome.

Roberto Reggi from the State Property Agency told The Local,

“The project will promote and support the development of the slow tourism sector. The goal is for private and public buildings which are no longer used to be transformed into facilities for pilgrims, hikers, tourists, and cyclists.”

Applicants have until June 26 to apply. Each successful applicant will then have a nine-year window to renovate and work on their project. There’s a possibility of extending it another nine years if necessary.

Don’t worry if you’re rejected the first time around. In the next two years, Italy plans to give out another 200 castles!
